In his teen
years, Orvin lived a few years with his sister Maggie and her husband Arthur
Gaston. He helped her with her farming
duties. After his mother died in 1931,
he continued living in their homestead with his father, Lee, and his brother
“Stiney” and his brother’s wife Pearlie.
During his early
school life he and his sister, Ruby (Doll) were in some classes together. Ruby said that Orvin was an excellent speller
and was a smart kid. She also indicated
that she would try to get him in trouble when they played together but he was a
good boy.
Marriage/Family Life:
Orvin enlisted in
the U.S. Army on June 11,
1942 in Tyler, TX.He served from ~approximately 2 years.He was in a laundry unit of a Quartermaster Company.He was stationed in North
Africa.He contracted
malaria while in North Africa and suffered
“shell shock”. After returning home from the military, suffering from "shell shock", Orvin was a difficult person to live with and , according to his sister Ruby (Doll), his oldest sister, "Sister" Katie was the only one of the family that could handle him.
Orvin, after
discharged from the military, moved to Palestine,
TX in 1944.
He married Sallie
Ophelia Freeman on July 15,
1946.
His children are:
Luvenia Roberson White (Mother – Irene Rogers) (1936); Norman Roberson (Father
- ??? Bossaw) (1943); Orvin Roberson, Jr. (1948); Linda Dian Roberson Williams
(1950); Bruce Roberson (1951); Herbert Roberson (1956); Randy Roberson (1957);
Paul Roberson (1959); Lee Roberson (1962).
Community/Social/Church Involvement :
Orvin accepted Christ at a very
early age at St. James Baptist Church, pastored by Reverend W.T. Perry.Later in life when he moved to Palestine, TX
he joined Grant Chapel AME Church
where in a Sunday School Teacher.After
moving to Los Angeles, CA in 1971 he joined Palestine Missionary
Baptist Church
in 1973 pastored by Reverend Fadell Beard, Sr.There, he served as a deacon and superintendent of Sunday School until
his death in 1986.
Education/Awards-
Orvin completed
one year of high school (9th Grade). Orvin and his
cousin Luther Gaston (Maggie’s son) went to high school in Palestine.This was because there was no high school in the rural community where
they lived and there was no high school in Elkhart, TX.Orvin and Luther were driven to Palestine by Luther’s Dad
and Orvin’s uncle, Arthur Gaston.
Later Life-
He work life
consisted of working for Firestone Tire – 1950s; Entrepreneur/Taxi operator
(late 50s – early 60s); Memorial
Hospital (60s).
He moved to Los Angeles, CA
in August 1971 and was there until his death in October 1986.
Orvin favorite sport was
baseball.He enjoyed listening to and
watching the Dodgers.He started
listening to baseball when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn, NY
when Jackie Robinson played for the team.He continued to follow the team after they moved to Los Angeles.He attended many games at Dodgers stadium.He also loved to play horseshoes.
He also enjoyed watching soap
operas, e.g., Days of Our Lives, General
Hospital, The Young &
the Restless, All My Children.He also
liked to watch Jeopardy.
