Andrew Roberson

Birth/Childhood
Andrew Roberson was born in Elkhart, Texas, in Anderson County on June 21, 1905 to Lee and Idella Whitehead Roberson. He was the third son of their fifteen children. The other children were:

He was the first son who lived to grow up and was therefore referred to as the oldest brother by his family. He was lovingly called Anda by all of them through out his life.

Teenage/Early Adulthood
Andrew attended Union Hope Elementary School. That was as far as free public education was provided for blacks in his community. His family was unable to pay tuition or furnish transportation to the school for blacks located up town Palestine.
He was fun loving, carefree and lovable. He played baseball and loved to dress up. He was a very nice dresser!
His job was to assist with the family farming chores. He also worked at the lumber mill for wages. As a young adult in the fall he would join groups of “Hands” to go on cotton pulling trips to West Texas, where they would stay for about a month on work detail.

Marriage/Family Life
In his early adulthood He married Lee Clewis. They had two children, Thelma Robinson Caston (L.B.) and Maurice Roberson (Bessie Lee). The family lived in a community in close proximity to both their parents.
Once when He went on one of his cotton picking trips west to Rotan, Texas, he met a cacassion man named Mr. Gaston. Mr. Gaston owned a gigantic farm in Fredrick Oklahoma. He offered Andrew a job as Foreman and Sharecropper for his farm. Andrew took the job and moved to Fredrick, Oklahoma. In his capacity as foreman he invited some other men (buddies) from his Texas community to come and live and work in Fredrick .He would also invite members of his family to come out in the fall for three to six week on cotton pulling sessions for pay.
While living in Fredrick he met and married Fleda Lee Gentry December 24, 1942. He had one step daughter, Rosie Lee; and one adopter daughter Arleane Roberson.
Mr. Gaston retired his farm and Andrew and all his buddies from home moved to Oklahoma, City, where he lived until he died April 10, 1984. He was buried April 13, 1984 in Spencer, Oklahoma

Church
He joined the St. James Baptist Church at an early age and united with The Church of the Living God (C.W.F.F.) in Spencer Oklahoma in the early sixties.
